The Most Haunted Road in Scotland - Ghosts and Hauntings - It began when a large hen came flapping towards the windscreen. No doubt an unexpected site while taking a midnight drive.Derek and Norman Ferguson were travelling along the wooded road at about midnight when this unexpected event took place. The frantic flapping of the hen, a bird not typically seen in flight, coming out of the head-lit gloom towards their windshield probably caused the Fergusons’ to brace for impact and the potentially cutting spray of glass as the windscreen cracked… but it never eventuated. There was no sickening crack, there was no spray of feathers (and worse), there was no jolt… there was nothing for before their very eyes the hen disappeared. However, before the two could breathe a sigh of relief another strange event took place – an old lady ran right towards the car head on, waving her arms frantically. Maybe she was after her chicken, maybe she had lost control of it during a midnight stroll through the woods? She disappeared before they could react to swerve out of her way. Then a man appeared and although the woman had mysteriously disappeared he seemed to be after her. He was joined by a group of many animals of all sorts… cats, dogs, sheep, goats and more hens.He too disappeared. The Ferguson’s had had enough, all had taken place during a most bewildering thirty seconds of craziness, so they stopped the car to have a breather. At this point the temperature dropped and the car started to slowly rock back and forth. Derek got out of the car (no one knows what he expected, what assault of craziness was to befall him as he left the relative safety of the car) but the movement stopped the instant his foot touched the ground.Derek stepped back into the car and the brothers bore witness to the sight of a large van baring down on them out of the dark at high speed. It too disappeared…It was 1962, and it was not the first or last strange event to take place on this section of Kinmount Straight, considered to be Scotland’s most haunted road and maybe the most haunted road in all of Britain.Known more commonly as the A75, it is a long and windy road, considered to be most dangerous with the haunted section reported to be the 15 mile stretch from Annan to Dumfries. It is this haunted reputation that gives it the nickname ‘The Ghost Road’.It is well known for the many roadside ghosts and apparitions that are encountered by motorists, including the vanishing couple – a man and woman hand in hand crossing the road suddenly in front of traffic to disappear just before or just after impact. There are also repeated reports of a man in a red top jumping out at lone traffic to disappear on impact.Weird looking creatures are also reported. One of the more disturbing sights is that of a man with a sack over his head. He stands in the road, arms outstretched to the driver. He appears to be holding something in his hand, possibly an old rag though some people report it as a length of rope. A man wearing similar clothes (or at least clothes of the same style) is seen on crutches, when the passengers of the vehicle get close they can see he has no eyes.. either reported as being empty sockets in his face or just more skin where his eyes should be.There seems to be no end to the various descriptions of the ghosts seen along Kinmount Straight Road.As for deaths that could be related to any of what is observed. Well it is considered one of the most dangerous roads in Scotland and no doubt that is because of the many accidents and deaths that have taken there. Also the area is very old country, in the darker history I would not doubt that many a death had occurred here at the end of a blade.Ashley Hall 2013Pictures: Views of the road and surrounding areas.

The Most Haunted Road in Scotland
- Ghosts and Hauntings

- It began when a large hen came flapping towards the windscreen. No doubt an unexpected site while taking a midnight drive.

Derek and Norman Ferguson were travelling along the wooded road at about midnight when this unexpected event took place.

He was joined by a group of many animals of all sorts… cats, dogs, sheep, goats and more hens.

He too disappeared.

The Ferguson’s had had enough, all had taken place during a most bewildering thirty seconds of craziness, so they stopped the car to have a breather. At this point the temperature dropped and the car started to slowly rock back and forth. Derek got out of the car (no one knows what he expected, what assault of craziness was to befall him as he left the relative safety of the car) but the movement stopped the instant his foot touched the ground.

Derek stepped back into the car and the brothers bore witness to the sight of a large van baring down on them out of the dark at high speed.

It too disappeared…

It was 1962, and it was not the first or last strange event to take place on this section of Kinmount Straight, considered to be Scotland’s most haunted road and maybe the most haunted road in all of Britain.

Known more commonly as the A75, it is a long and windy road, considered to be most dangerous with the haunted section reported to be the 15 mile stretch from Annan to Dumfries. It is this haunted reputation that gives it the nickname ‘The Ghost Road’.

It is well known for the many roadside ghosts and apparitions that are encountered by motorists, including the vanishing couple – a man and woman hand in hand crossing the road suddenly in front of traffic to disappear just before or just after impact. There are also repeated reports of a man in a red top jumping out at lone traffic to disappear on impact.

Weird looking creatures are also reported.

One of the more disturbing sights is that of a man with a sack over his head. He stands in the road, arms outstretched to the driver. He appears to be holding something in his hand, possibly an old rag though some people report it as a length of rope. A man wearing similar clothes (or at least clothes of the same style) is seen on crutches, when the passengers of the vehicle get close they can see he has no eyes.. either reported as being empty sockets in his face or just more skin where his eyes should be.

There seems to be no end to the various descriptions of the ghosts seen along Kinmount Straight Road.

As for deaths that could be related to any of what is observed. Well it is considered one of the most dangerous roads in Scotland and no doubt that is because of the many accidents and deaths that have taken there. Also the area is very old country, in the darker history I would not doubt that many a death had occurred here at the end of a blade.
